Import/Copy objects between applications

Postby john w » 24 April 2024, 16:40

I need to import a Form/Panel, Procedure, Book/Report and IMDB from one application into another application.

It's not clear to me how I do this, any suggestions are appreciated.

It appears I needed to open both projects and then drag the objects I wanted copied to the new project. It seems to have worked. I just wonder if this is the best way of doing it?

Yes it is!!
Be aware that obviously all related items are also copied (databases, tables, documents...)

I am thinking I was just lucky with the copy this time. It worked but not because I planned it or knew what I was doing.

It would be nice if InDe has a feature to allow for the movement of objects between applications.

When I do this operations, I always use folders. I put all the related objects I want to move in a single folder (except if it's database or in a different component), then I drag the entire folder. It's so much better. Otherwise 9 times out of ten INDE is going to break some relation or duplicate some procedure or let the new procedure linked to the previous object.
Put everything in a folder, and drag that. You can drop it in another application or another project. Use CTRL, SHIFT, ALT to chose to copy or move.

That is a good suggestion! I will try to implement that process moving forward. I just need a reliable way to do this when needed.

On technique I use (I think I read this on the Italian forum), is to create a New Empty Project, and use it as an intermediary. I drag what I want to copy to this project first and see what all comes with it. If the projects use different databases, then this is really handy. I delete what I don't want to copy, and then copy some of the target items to this New project if needed to relink items, then when happy with what is in the New Project copy it to the final target.

I need to try that folder trick next time!
