Edit html files in InDe IDE

Postby john w » 21 December 2015, 15:57

It would be nice to be able to edit .html/.htm files using the InDe IDE. Since these files can be part of an InDe project it would be a nice feature.

At today there is not a function which enables you to browse the custom folder content, parhaps those two things should be done toghether.

Being able to browse the custom folder and open the files in a specified application (not Instant Developer but installed in the system) would do?

Yes being able to open and edit the type of files in the Custom folder would be nice. It would be an nice feature to be able to edit .htm/html, txt and css files from within the InDe IDE.

Right now I have to use an application(s) outside of InDe to do that work, which seems to be added overhead. I would not think a text editor would be a complex addition to the IDE but perhaps there more than I know.

Anyway being able to do that within the IDE would save some steps and that would save time.

I'm trying to separate the different types of needing do to that:
1) beign able to navigate che custom folder
2) being able to launche an app which is able to edit the target file
3) do all of that from within Instant Developer.

The first easy step can be to simply make the user able to jump on an explorer window targeted to the custom folder. In this way you are free to browse it and edit the files using your favourite tool.

The second step can be to add a text editor, but adding one that's really a good html editor isn't so easy and I don't think Instant Developer should aim to be a good editor for external code. There are a lot of good editor that will ever be better, or at least equal, at editing html.

Plus, the image files are a more troublesome foe.

I guess that implementing a way with which browse easly and communicate with external application will be a good step forward. In any case I'm adding a task to keep track of this conversation and to evalutate your suggestion :)

Thanks for considering this. You are correct I can go through the steps you mention, which is what I have to do now. It would be nice however, just to have an Editor for these file types under the Tools menu. It would be nice to see the Custom Folder in the project file explorer as well. It seems many people use Custom files so why not have it a part of that file tree and created when you create a new project.

I am wondering if you could not scheme a way to have people do like they do with browser selection in the Options and add and editor choice there. Then run it from an editor option under the Tools menu.

Enough from me, again I appreciate any consideration given to the suggestion.
