License Verification

Postby john w » 8 May 2014, 15:43

It appears InDe needs to verify the license with your servers when it opens. I appreciate the reasons for this, however there are times when network services are down and the verification/confirmation process is not possible.

It would be nice if you could add something like a time stamp so it would only be needed periodically. Perhaps every 15 - 30 days. That way you can still protect the license, but allow work to continue in the event of a network connection issue. Nothing is a 100% and there may be better ways than a time stamp, but it is something that needs to be considered.

InDe tries to verify licence at startup, just like you said, but it's still possible to work without connectivity for one month. Without connectivity you can't get a licence from the server, of course, but you won't lose the one currently assigned to the installation.

When I pulled my network (removed the hardware to connect) then opened InDe I was limited to the Express version and not the licensed version. When I reconnected the network, I needed to confirm the license before I was able use it (Enterprise version).

Also a number of developers have mentioned the matter needing to have their license reset on your servers. You are great about doing that, but still its a frequent enough topic of discussion by several different people it may be worth looking into. It seems more frequent for those who share the license between devices and release it on one before using it on another.

Seems that the two configurations that you're taling about (with and without netwotk) makes InDe calculates two different identifiers for the installation. At today, in this case you lose your license.

Did I understand well that the case decribed below it what happens to you?

1) assign the license to the current installation
2) close InDe
3) remove the hardware to connect
4) open InDe
5) now you are in express mode

In this case, you are removing an hardware and not only unplugging the cable, aren't you?

In my case I have InDe on my dev pc. I dont release the license.
- I have a perpetual license
- I opened InDe and have the the full license version
- I close InDe
- I use a wireless network and physically disconnect the network adapter. There is now no way for the dev pc to connect to the internet
- I open InDe
- I am in the Express version not the full licensed version.
- I have a perpetual license
- I close InDe
- I reconnect the adapter to connect to the wireless network
- I open InDe and I am still in the Express version
- I go to the show license window (Help menu item)
- I am prompted to confirm the license and click confirm
- I now have the full licensed version again.

For someone with a perpetual license this does not seem to be correct behavior.

When you select the license, what message do you see on the left of the confim button ?

When I am prompted to confirm the license it says 'Confirm License'. That does not appear until I reconnect to the network. Until that happens I left with the Express version.

Ok, thanks for answering. That's a known behavior that we want to make better. Actually, plugging and unplugging the network adapter changes the internal identifier of your InDe installation, that's handled and all your data are kept. The exception is the licence, that is lost if you change that identifier.

In the future, one possibile solution is to consider good all the IDs previously assigned to your licence, avoiding to lose it if you swap from one ID to the other.

At today, we have to assign again the licence. In one of the next versions we want to make that behavior disappear.
